Potential ice rescue turned out to be false alarm, but leads to safety message

Despite the recent cold snap, 'the ice is certainly not safe at this time,' says Barrie Fire official

Crews from Barrie Fire’s water rescue team braved the frigid temperatures out on Kempenfelt Bay last night after receiving a call that someone may have fallen through the ice.

“A resident that lived near the shore thought they saw a person venture out on the ice,” the fire department’s deputy chief, Carrie Clark, told BarrieToday. “In their mind, it was a very short timeline and the person was gone, so they called us concerned that they’d gone through the ice.”

The water rescue team followed the set of footprints out at Minet’s Point Park, however noticed there was a returning set of footprints back to the shore and found no cracks or holes in that area and deemed there was in fact no emergency, she added.

Although the city has experienced some pretty cold temperatures over the last few days, Clark is reminding residents that no ice is safe ice.

“The ice is certainly not safe at this time,” she said, adding despite the recent temperatures it has still not been cold enough to freeze the ice to a safe level.

“It’s also very hard to see with a skiff of snow on top.” Clark added. “Thankfully, everything worked out (Monday night), but the ice is not safe at this time and we are asking everyone to please stay off the ice.”
