John Brassard, Barrie-Innisfil Member of Parliament and Shadow Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced today that he is launching a new initiative called “Community and Country Happy Hour.”

A limited number of guests (6 to 8) will be invited to participate in a weekly Zoom call for a casual discussion about any topic related to our community and our country.

The list of invited participants will be selected by Brassard, his community outreach and communications team.

Participants will include political figures from our community and country representing all political parties, business owners, community leaders, faith leaders, sports figures, individuals from the community and the media.

“We know that the challenges we face as a community and a country are great, and I believe the only way we can face them and find solutions is to talk to each other, as Canadians. That means having respectful conversations and sharing ideas,” Brassard stated. “Community and Country Happy Hours are about getting to know each other better, regardless of what our political ideology is or what belief system we subscribe to. It’s about talking to each other.”

The new initiative is an attempt to bring people together for friendly and respectful discussions that are free of the echo-chambers fostered in like-minded social media chat groups.

Brassard made a commitment as part of his 2021 goals to work on initiatives that unite people in conversation. The “Community and Country Happy Hour” will launch soon and be held weekly.

Chats will be lightly moderated with a ‘do no harm” principle and a goal of creating a safe space to explore common ground in an increasingly polarized world.

“My hope is that the Community and Country table will be a place that we can meaningfully connect with each other, have some fun and share our ideas for Barrie-Innisfil and Canada,” Brassard concluded.
