MPP Doug Downey optimistic about 'exciting year' ahead

Downey says he looks forward to completing local infrastructure projects while further modernizing the justice system, saying '2023 is going to be an exciting year'

With many reflecting on the year that was, the provincial representative for Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte (BSOM) says he is excited about the future of the region.

BSOM MPP Doug Downey, who is also the province's attorney general, won a second term for the position this past June, narrowly defeating the Liberal representative at the time, Jeff Lehman.

Downey spoke about that race and also told BarrieToday that the year 2022 in his riding made him think of renewal and hope.

“Events are attracting people that want to re-engage with their communities. Parades, events, markets and celebrations are all on the upswing,” said Downey. “Provincial and municipal elections were a time of excitement and renewal or confirmation and businesses are getting busier. Unfortunately the year was also marked by tragedy with the loss of front-line officers and youth in our area.”

Looking ahead, Downey says in 2023 he wants to focus on creating housing supply to meet growing demand.

“I also look forward to completing infrastructure projects like the Anne Street bridge and sound barriers, making progress on the YMCA, further expansion of broadband, and more local jobs and economic growth,” said Downey.

“And in my continued role as attorney general I look forward to some exciting announcements that further modernize a justice system that had been neglected for decades. 2023 is going to be an exciting year.”
