Members of the Georgian Grizzlies men’s rugby team were recognized for their tremendous achievements over the course of the regular season on Saturday in Oshawa.

The Grizzlies finished the regular season with a record of 5-1 and they were officially recognized as the OCAA west division champions.

Georgian was the most prolific scoring team this season putting up 382 points, nearly an average of 64 points per game. The Grizzlies also gave up the second fewest points allowed in the league with 92 over six games. This is the fourth straight season Georgian has won the OCAA west division title.

Several individuals picked up awards as well.

Georgian’s Ryan Connolly (Barrie) was the OCAA scoring champion after an incredible season which saw the second year scrum-half lead all players with 96 points from four tries and 38 coverts in six regular season games.

Connolly, who was last year’s OCAA rookie of the year, had 25 more points than the league’s next highest scorer.

Georgian winger Tennyson Brown dazzled with his remarkable running ability and speed during the season and was named the OCAA’s west division rookie of the year.

The Alliston native finished the regular season with nine tries for 45 points to finish in a tie for 9th overall in league scoring.

Grizzlies Head Coach John Daggett was awarded once again the OCAA west division coach of the year.

This is the fourth time Daggett has been named as the OCAA west division coach of the year. He was the overall OCAA coach of the year in the 2016-17 season.

In his seven years at the helm of the Georgian men’s rugby program, Daggett has compiled a regular season record of 33-8-1 and has earned silver, gold and bronze medals in each of the previous three seasons.

Five Grizzlies were also named as OCAA west division all-stars with Tennyson Brown, Alex Butt (Mississauga), Donovan Jacko (Brampton), Liam Wilson (Orillia) and Jacob Young (Barrie) each earning the honour.

One final award is yet to be determined in the men’s rugby season, the league championship.

The gold medal game between the Grizzlies and Durham Lords originally scheduled for Saturday was postponed due to inclement weather which made the field unplayable. A rescheduled date and time for the game will be announced in the near future.
