From Feb. 12 to March 5, the City of Barrie welcomed entries from youth sharing why they love Barrie. The 5th annual I Love Barrie contest was open to all elementary school aged students in the city.

In total from 2020 and 2021, the City received over 110 entries to the contest. This year, students from 19 elementary schools across the city submitted artwork and short stories.

“I love this time of the year — reviewing the contest entries is so inspiring. Encouraging the development of Barrie’s youth gives me all the motivation I need,” says Ward 10 Councillor Mike McCann. “The I Love Barrie contest is just one way we invest in our future.”

The I Love Barrie contest winners from 2020 and 2021 have been selected:

  • Primary (Kindergarten to Grade 3): Jack Prestwich, Grade 3, Assikinack Public School
  • Junior (Grade 4 to 6): Sadie Mitton, Grade 6, West Bayfield Elementary School
  • Intermediate (Grade 7 and 8): Eden Goreta, Grade 7, St. John Paul II Catholic School

The winners’ names will be shared in The Barrie Advance in the City’s “This Week in Barrie” feature later this month.

Jack, Sadie and Eden will also showcase their artwork or read their short story at an upcoming Barrie City Council meeting, and will have the opportunity to join the KOOL FM and Rock 95 morning shows (virtually) in April.

The winning entries can be viewed via barrie.ca/MyBarrie.
