Heat rises on Labour Day as kids look ahead to school Tuesday

Young student plans 'to see my friends and do some work sometimes, but not all the time,' says 11-year-old

Hot summer temperatures arrived Monday, and will last for the next few days, much to the dismay of many kids as they head back to school on Tuesday.

Local temperatures are expected to reach 30 Celsius through Wednesday.

Not surprisingly, Centennial Beach in Barrie was a magnet for sunbathers and swimmers as many families tried to soak up the rays on the final day of summer break.

Michael David, 11, wasn’t terribly happy to be heading back to class as he goes into Grade 6.

“I’m not looking forward to it,” he told BarrieToday as he and his family eat lunch on a blanket near the beach.

When asked why, he says without hesitation, “who does?”

“I don’t want it to be this hot and playing outside (at school),” David said.

He said spending time at the beach was his favourite activity this summer, and he admits he does like the recess part of school, because he’ll get to see his friends again.

Sebastien Lerous, 11, from Toronto, said he was at Centennial Beach on Monday to have a nice swim, but was tired from the heat already.

His plan as he heads back to school is “to see my friends and do some work sometimes, but not all the time,” he said.

His 12-year-old brother, Matheo Lerous, disagreed about going back to school tomorrow, as he was having too much fun.

His family had an adventurous summer, as they visited France. Matheo said that his favourite part of the trip was eating chocolate croissants.

Their mother, Gabriella, says she's more than happy to shuffle her sons out the door in the morning and get them back to school.

“I’m excited,” she said. “I’m very happy and I’m counting down the hours. It’s good for them to be in school, to have structure, learn, and meet with their friends again.”
