Laura Thomas, an expert in ecology, native plants and landscape design, is speaking about Gardening for Wildlife at the Barrie Garden Club’s (BGC) May 7 meeting.

Thomas, the owner of Hidden Habitat in Muskoka, a native nursery that grows wildflowers, grasses and shrubs native to Ontario, believes that gardeners can merge the elements of good landscape design with the practices of restoration ecology. You can have the simplicity and impact of a modern garden while also providing food and shelter for local wildlife.

A graduate of the University of Waterloo’s Environment and Resource Studies Program and a self-described enthusiastic environmentalist, Thomas has worked in the landscape field for more than 15 years, blending her passion for conservation and landscape design. She is a director with the Muskoka Conservancy, and enjoys leading the occasional Nature Quest in one of the conservancy’s nature reserves.

The meeting takes place Tuesday, May 7 at 7 p.m. at the ANAF Club, 52 Morrow Rd., Barrie. This thoughtful speaker is free to BGC members, and is only $5 for non-members.

For more information about the BGC or to join the club, see www.barriegardenclub.ca. You can also find us on Facebook and Instagram. And mark your calendars for June 23 when the BGC will be celebrating its 150 anniversary celebration at Sunnidale Park; all are welcome.
