On June 30, the City of Barrie and the Barrie Public Art Committee are launching a summer-long public art exhibition. Art in Unexpected Places, presented by Pratt Homes, features temporary public art pieces that celebrate our local and national history and showcase the work of contemporary Canadian artists in honour of Canada 150.
All are welcome to attend the Art in Unexpected Places launch at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 30 at the Barrie Transit Downtown Terminal (24 Maple Ave.), to view one of the first installations — Soapbox by Chris Hanson and Hendrika Sonnenberg. Other installations in the downtown include:
- Blue Shore by Nicolas Sassoon outside Tyger Shark office (93 Dunlop St. E.)
- Rabbit by Ryan Park (9 Clapperton St.)
- Quadriga (variant) by Max Streicher coming to the Mady Centre for Performing Arts (1 Dunlop St. W.) on August 18
- Limelight by Sans Façon coming to a surprise location in downtown Barrie on September 1
All installations will be up until September 4, 2017.
The city is offering art walks of these installations, each from a different perspective (curatorial, tourism and heritage), or pick up a map and take a self-guided tour. Maps are available here and in the following locations starting June 30:
- City Hall (70 Collier Street)
- Mady Centre for Performing Arts (1 Dunlop St. W.)
- Tourism Barrie (205 Lakeshore Dr.)
- Creative Economy – Culture Branch (56 Mulcaster St.)
