The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s volleyball teams travelled east for a pair of games this weekend against the Algonquin Thunder and the La Cite Coyotes in Ottawa.

The men’s team put together a great performance on Friday against Algonquin.

Georgian had an excellent game winning in convincing fashion 3-1 with set scores of 25-18, 23-25, 25-13 and 25-14.

Erich Perau (Peterborough) had a tremendous game leading the team with a 23 point effort from 19 kills, three aces and a block. It was his highest scoring game since joining the Grizzlies this season.

Liam Gray (Barrie) was solid once again with 26 assists and five more aces as he continues to lead the entire OCAA from the service line.

They then played the La Cite Coyotes on Saturday in a battle of the only two undefeated teams in the OCAA east division standings.

The match lived up to the hype coming right down to the wire. The Coyotes took the first set 25-20 with the Grizzlies responding in the second set 25-21.

The two teams traded the next two sets as well, with the Coyotes taking set three 25-18 before the Grizzlies forced a fifth set tiebreak by taking set four 25-21.

With the intensity at its peak in the deciding set it was the Coyotes who were able to pull it out 15-12 to win the match 3-2.

Overall the Coyotes outscored the Grizzlies 107-96 in a very tight game.

Erich Perau continued his strong road trip leading the Grizzlies with a 21 point effort while Darien Haynes (Barrie) also had a good game with a 13 point performance.

The loss was the Grizzlies first of the season and only their second loss in the team's last 41 regular season matches.

It was a tough road trip for the women’s team. They started off against Algonquin and just couldn’t put things together falling in three straight 3-0.

The Thunder were able to take the sets 25-14, 25-11 and 25-22.

Alandria Czerkas (Sudbury) was Georgian's leading scorer with seven points from four kills and three aces. Alyssa Muller (Whitby) and Kelsey Watson (Barrie) each had five point games.

In their second game Saturday against La Cite, the Grizzlies were one point away from closing out the first set, but the Coyotes rallied back to score five consecutive points to take the opening frame 26-24.

Georgian regrouped in the second set to take it 25-16 but that was a close as they got.

The home Coyotes continued their strong play to take the final two sets to win the match 3-1 (26-24, 16-25, 25-18, 25-20).

Kelsey Watson led the Grizzlies in scoring with 17 points while teammate Domenica De Francesco (Barrie) also had a strong game with 16 points.

The Grizzlies record dropped to 2-3 on the season. They have a perfect record at home but are yet to win a road game this season.
