Diesel spill on Hwy. 400 forces lane closures through Barrie

Two southbound lanes closed between Essa Road and Dunlop Street ramps after truck struck the median and began leaking diesel fuel

Two southbound lanes on Highway 400 are closed through Barrie following a crash and subsequent fuel leak, Wednesday afternoon

Cleanup is underway between the Dunlop Street and Essa Road ramps after a truck's fuel tank rupture and began leaking diesel on the roadway.

Deputy fire chief Derek Wilson told BarrieToday the call came in shortly after 2 p.m. “from a concerned driver who saw fuel leaking from the truck’s tank.”

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the transport truck hit a highway median, causing the rupture.

“It was a single-vehicle collision and right now cleanup is continuing, with two southbound lanes blocked and one still moving,” Schmidt told BarrieToday around 3 p.m.

Schmidt said the cleanup was expected to take about an hour or so, with crews using an absorbent to help clean the highway.

Earlier this afternoon, Highway 400 lanes were also closed following a vehicle fire in the Bradford area, but have since reopened.
