Demolition of Anne Street bridge draws a crowd (Video)

Crews demolished the structure overnight Saturday as an 18-month-long project to replace the bridge begins

If pizza and beer were being served, it would have been the perfect Saturday night in Barrie.

The Anne Street bridge drew onlookers overnight Saturday as crews demolished the structure, taking advantage of a warm early summer’s night, with Highway 400 below closed from 10 p.m. Saturday until Sunday at 8 a.m.

Anne Street was shut down for traffic last month from Edgehill Drive to Donald Street as the 18-month project to replace the span began. The work, led by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, also includes significant road work to the highway that bisects the city from Dunlop Street to St. Vincent Street.

The Anne Street bridge will be replaced with a larger structure that includes wide sidewalks and a wider bridge deck to improve traffic operations and is meant to include active transportation, according to the City of Barrie website. The project is to include improvement at the Anne/Edgehill and Anne/Donald intersections.

The larger span will also be large enough to accommodate a wider highway below in the future.
