Deal reached between city, union workers

City of Barrie CAO calls new deal ‘fair and equitable'

After several months of negotiations, the City of Barrie and CUPE Local 2380 have reached a tentative agreement that will set them up until late 2025.

The agreement was ratified by CUPE Local 2380 members last night.

City of Barrie chief administrative officer Michael Prowse said in a statement that he was happy to see both sides reach a deal.

“I am pleased that we were able to reach a balanced agreement with CUPE Local 2380 that is fair and equitable,” said Prowse. “The agreement focuses on employee well-being and recognizes the important work that our employees do every day to serve our residents and keep our city moving.”

The city says the agreement is for a 3.5-year term (July 1, 2022 to Dec. 31, 2025) and is in line with recent negotiated contracts in comparable municipalities.

The agreement includes the following wage increases: 1.8 per cent (July 1, 2022); 2 per cent (Jan. 1, 2023); 2 per cent (Jan 1, 2024); and 2 per cent (Jan. 1, 2025).

The current contract expires today.

CUPE Local 2380 represents municipal workers who provide public services ranging from parks and recreational services, water and wastewater treatment, public works, courthouse services, financial and administrative services, city planning, bylaw enforcement, building and marina services, and others.

Michael Murphy, president of CUPE Local 2380, told BarrieToday via email that he was also satisfied with the new deal.

“I am very grateful for the support that we received from our membership and how their solidarity with our bargaining committee helped us reach an agreement with the City of Barrie. I am very satisfied with this deal which is balanced and fair to our members and the tax payers of the city.” said Murphy.

“I am very proud of our membership’s ability and eagerness to continue providing vital services to the residents of the City of Barrie over the past several years and look forward to continuing to provide them in the future," he added. "I would also like to thank the City of Barrie’s negotiating team for their co-operation and dedication.”
