A new contract between union workers and the City of Barrie could be a done deal by week’s end.

At tonight’s (June 27) general committee and city council meeting, Barrie councillors will consider a confidential labour relations matter on negotiations with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 2380.

Later this week, close to 600 CUPE workers will vote on a new collective bargaining agreement.

City union workers voted 99.5 per cent in favour of a strike mandate on June 7, and their contract with the city expires at the end of June.

Negotiations have included an Ontario Labour Ministry appointed conciliation officer to work with CUPE and the city

At stake in the new deal for CUPE is job security and fair compensation, a percentage increase for city workers.

However, none of the negotiating details of the proposed contract have been made public.

CUPE workers provide a range of public services including water and wastewater treatment, parks and recreation, financial and administrative services and city planning.
