Ward 10 in Barrie’s south end is down to two candidates for the upcoming municipal election after a candidate was forced to withdraw.

Peter Culyer’s name will still appear on the ballot for the October election, but he has had to pull out of the race due to “medical complications and related treatments.”

Culyer didn’t want to elaborate, citing privacy.

“It just became a bridge too far for me,” the 51-year-old told BarrieToday on Thursday. “It’s a situation where it’s going to interfere with my campaign.

“The decision was not an easy one, but it was an obvious one,” added Culyer, who moved to Barrie as a young boy of seven years old.

The remaining candidates in Ward 10 are incumbent Mike McCann and John Olthuis.

Culyer says he hopes to step into the political ring again in the future and another run hasn’t been ruled out.

“I entered the race because I see problems not only in the ward, but within the city as well,” said Culyer, adding he believes there’s a level of “complacency, a malaise if you will” around the council table.

The municipal election is set for Oct. 22.
