One person is in police custody following a crash at the Essa Road ramp from Highway 400 in Barrie, Friday afternoon.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a driver failed to stop for a police officer doing speed enforcement shortly after 1 p.m., in the northbound lanes approaching Essa Road, and accelerated away.

Schmidt said there was no police pursuit, but the vehicle crashed a short distance away as the driver tried to exit at Essa Road. A suspect was taken into custody a short distance away.

A 21-year-old Toronto man has been charged with stunt driving, dangerous driving and driving without a licence

“There is history with police and we continue to investigate right now,” Schmidt said.

The ramp has since re-opened and the scene has been cleared.

“High-risk driving behaviour, especially through the city of Barrie, puts everybody at risk,” Schmidt said.
