'Cascading' collisions caused by unfit commercial vehicle: police

On Wednesday, July 25th, 2018 at 3:05 pm Barrie Police Traffic Unit was called to Fairview Road and Essa Road, in the city of Barrie, after a string of collisions.

The investigation determined a commercial motor vehicle transporting water was travelling southbound on Fairview Road when a mechanical issue caused the driver to lose power and subsequently control of the vehicle. It then began to roll backwards causing three collisions with other vehicles until it came to a rest against another car in the intersection.

The cascading collisions caused damage to multiple vehicle with no serious physical injuries reported. 

The driver of the water truck, a 19-year-old male from Utopia, was charged with:

  • Operate Unsafe Commercial Motor Vehicle
  • Drive Commercial Motor Vehicle with Major Defect
  • Fail to Complete an Accurate Daily Inspection Report

A 44-year-old male from Utopia, who is the owner of the vehicle and happened to be in the passenger seat at the time of the incident, was charged with:

  • Permit Driving Commercial Motor Vehicle- Not in Accordance with Permit Limitations
  • Permit Operation of an Unsafe Commercial Motor Vehicle
  • Fail to Ensure Performance Standards Are Met
  • Operate Commercial Motor Vehicle- No Valid CVOR Certificate
