Barrie Farmers' Market hosting ghoulish costume contest Saturday

'We are really hoping to see those people who really put in the effort to go all out and zombie or witch themselves up,' says market manager

This weekend’s Barrie Farmers’ Market will be taken over by goblins, ghouls and witches — or at least that’s the hope.

Saturday’s market, which will be the final outdoor market of the season before it moves inside the Barrie City Hall Rotunda for the winter, will be hosting a Halloween costume contest.

“We held a pumpkin-carving contest a few weeks ago, but this is the first time for a costume contest,” market manager Jaime Grant told BarrieToday. “What I am looking for is to just give people an opportunity to have fun. I would like them to dress up, dress up their kids, dress up their pets.

"We have a lot of animals that come to visit at the market these days, and we would definitely like to see all these cute little animals and kids in costume.”

Grant says she's especially hoping to see those individuals who go all out for the spooky holiday join in.

“We are really hoping to see those people who really put in the effort to go all out and zombie or witch themselves up and display that effort in a public way, so offer a public way for that” she said.

Judging is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and participants will be eligible for one of several categories: Best Dressed Pet, Best Zombie, and Best Kids Costume.

“We will have medals made by an artisan that will be awarded right then and there so they don’t have to wait,” Grant said. “Everyone who participates gets a sweet treat, too.”
