DOWNTOWN BARRIE BIA

Enjoy a summer of movies under the stars with the return of Lawnchair Luminata, each Wednesday night in Meridian Place at dusk, until the end of August.
Bring a lawnchair and snacks from your favourite downtown spot.
The season kicks off this Wednesday, June 21 with a screening of Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On, in honour of National Indigenous People’s Day.
You can also learn the story behind the mural on downtown’s pink wall; ahead of the movie a mini documentary about The Land Knows You art installation by Alanah Astehtsi Otsistohkwa (Morningstar) Jewell will be showcased.
Arrive early for activities with the Barrie Public Library. Create your own natural art with sidewalk chalk to help decorate Downtown Barrie. Design a button, then use their button-maker to frame your artistic work. Be inspired by the cedars, sun, moon and stars or explore the bear, fish and eagles of The Land Knows You mural.
Bring the family for this fun-filled activity, designed to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day and remind us where we come from and how much we are loved by the land.
You can also learn about Metis beadwork through an art activity with the organization Metis and Me, and join local artist Monica Loney for a string art activity, representing community connection.

Madison Thomas’ feature documentary Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On is a joyous, challenging account of this cultural and musical icon’s lifelong commitment to music and sharing the truth. Buffy shares her own story from her early love of music to the activism she continues to this day, despite her career being suppressed because of it.
Additional interviews include Alanis Obomsawin, Joni Mitchell, Robbie Robertson and many others whose lives Buffy has touched.
Screened as part of National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day programming hosted by the City of Barrie and the Downtown Barrie BIA, in partnership with the Barrie Film Festival, with support from Meridian Credit Union.
