It was game on for 'nerds' of all ages at library, Five Points Theatre

'I really think it is so big because society is realizing you can like and celebrate whatever makes you happy. Cosplay and video games make people happy'

Geeks were everywhere downtown today as the Barrie Public Library Comic Con and the City of Barrie’s Game On welcomed kids of all ages.

The annual events bring in thousands of people to the downtown library branch and the Five Points Theatre to celebrate cosplay and video games.

Painswick branch librarian Liz Kerr helped organize Saturday’s Comic Con and also looks forward to participating each year.

“Big nerd, right here,” said Kerr. “I look forward to this day each year and from the smiles on people’s faces, many others do as well.”

Last year, approximately 3,000 attended the events that allow fans of the comic genre to dress up as their favourite characters and video-game enthusiasts to get their fill of gaming.

Kerr expects another large crowd this weekend as inclusion continues to become popular.

“We start planning pretty much from the previous year’s event,” she said. “It takes a lot of work, but we get a few thousand people through the doors and it makes it all so worth it.

"I really think it is so big because society is realizing you can like and celebrate whatever makes you happy," Kerr added. "Cosplay and video games make people happy.”
