The Barrie Speed Skating Club will host a drop-in open house tonight at the Allandale Recreation Centre, located in the city's south end at 190 Bayview Dr. The event, which runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m., provides an opportunity for people to stop by to watch and learn about speed skating, while also talking to members of the club. You can also get an up-close look at gear and register for the TryB4 program. For more information on the club, click here

Grey and Simcoe Foresters

The public is invited to celebrate the Grey and Simcoe Foresters' regimental birthday on Saturday afternoon at the Barrie Armoury, located at 37 Parkside Dr. This event, which runs from 2 to 5 p.m., will include a reunion as well as an informational briefing. The Grey Regiment and the Simcoe Foresters were founded in September 1866. The former Grey Regiment and the Simcoe Foresters were later amalgamated in 1936 to form the present-day unit. The Honourable Guard includes community, business and political leaders to support and promote the regiment, and the Canadian Armed Forces. For more information, click here

Barrie Hill Farms Fall Festival

The Barrie Hill Farms Fall Festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday. This is a chance to sip on hot pressed apple cider, pick your own apples and pumpkins, and enjoy other fall treats at the Silo Cafe. There will also be live music and artisan vendor booths. Ever heard of apple cider donuts? Well, this event will have those, too. The farm is located at 2935 Barrie Hill Rd., just outside Barrie in Springwater Township. Barrie Fall Fishing Festival

The Barrie Fall Fishing Festival takes place all weekend, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, on Kempenfelt Bay along the Barrie waterfront, and continuing until Oct. 1. The event is a catch-and-release fishing tournament involving tagged perch. Fifty-six tagged perch have been released into Kempenfelt Bay, with a minimum cash value of $300 and up to $1,000. There is a prize pool in excess of $50,000 and the event is expected to attract more than 1,000 anglers over the 10-day festival. Organizers say it encourages anglers of all ages and skill levels to enjoy fishing, the beautiful fall weather, and the spectacular fall colours of the bay from boat or from shore. Net proceeds from the festival help fund the numerous environmental projects taken on by the Barrie-Huronia Rotary Club.
