Exhibition at college gallery features 'thought-provoking' art

Re-Emerge is a month-long, student-curated show that includes 12 artists who are faculty members in the School of Art and Design

Curated by the students in the museum and gallery studies program, Georgian College's Campus Gallery is hosting an art exhibit called Re-Emerge until Feb. 5 in Barrie.

In 2023, officials say The Campus Gallery will continue to work with "dynamic artists in thought-provoking exhibitions." This includes the Re-Emerge showing, which opened Jan. 7.

Re-Emerge is a month-long, student-curated show that includes 12 artists who are faculty members in the School of Art and Design for Georgian College. They include Amy Bagshaw, Michael Farnan, Sadko Hadzihasanovic, Jason Hunter, Max Lupo, Jeff Nye, Tony Pickard-Ferguson, Nic Rodrigo, Kat Sumpton, Amy Switzer, Clinton Todd, and Andrea Wenckebach.

The college says their creations originated during and as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Re-Emerge showing has been described as bringing "to life a rebirth of gallery spaces and artistic motivation following a long period of isolation. In terms of relevance, it emphasizes the consequential reflections of art and its role in the wake of this international tribulation."

All audiences are encouraged to attend. The Campus Gallery is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., as well as Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is located in Room 140 in 'D' building, which is the Helen and Arch Brown Centre for Design and Visual Arts, at 1 Georgian Dr.

Other upcoming events in the works include Sean-William Dawson's Simple Abundance from Feb. 15 until March 26, followed by an exhibition featuring work by second-year fine arts students from March 30 to April 19, and then a student scholarship show from April 28 to May 17. More details are expected to be announced soon on those exhibitions. The gallery will then be closed until September 2023

The Campus Gallery was closed during the pandemic, but reopened in September 2022 with a fall programming schedule that included exhibitions from artists Sue A. Miller and Jill Price.
