The following letter from reader Bud York is in response to 'LETTER: People of 'sound mind' should be able to choose MAID' published Feb. 17.

I totally agree with the wishes of Pauline King when she says she would like the opportunity of signing a form authorizing MAID service, ahead of time, should she become affected with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease to the point of not knowing or recognizing her family members anymore.

I am 81 now and I would like that option as well because I would not want my family to have to suffer through that awful dilemma.

At that stage in life, you are not living, you are just existing, and are putting an awful burden on your family.

Here’s hoping the government will allow people of sound mind to take such action before it is too late.
