Province OK's opening of drive-ins; Sunset not quite ready to open

'I do know that when we open we will be absolutely putting the safety of the guests and our staff above anything else,' says manager of Oro-Medonte facility

The provincial government has announced that drive-in theatres will be allowed to open as of Sunday, May 31.

The news came via press release Saturday morning. In the same release, batting cages were also given the green light.

David Hayes, who manages the Sunset Barrie Drive-In Theatre on the 4th line in Shanty Bay, said while he was happy about the news, he says the local drive-in won't be opening Sunday.

“We won’t be opening tomorrow, not that soon,” said Hayes. “We don’t have the movies, the ads or anything else to get opened in 24 hours. It is great that we’ve all been given the go-ahead, but the government doesn’t know what is involved.”

Hayes said there is a possibility Sunset could open by this coming Tuesday, but, if not, he says they will be open Friday, June 5.

He said he is still waiting to hear exactly what restrictions he will have to abide by; there were no details provided.

“I don’t know what the government will be asking us to do, but we’ll make sure we can do it,” said Hayes. “We are already planning to add extra washrooms, reduce to a 50 percent capacity and we have PPE for staff.”

Sunset, which typically opens in mid-March, can welcome over 1,000 vehicles to its three screens in normal circumstances.

COVID-19 restrictions meant drive-ins were unable to open for their season and while he understands, the Sunset manager said it has been tough.

“We haven't made a dollar this year,” said Hayes. “I get it and everyone has to do their part. I do know that when we open we will be absolutely putting the safety of the guests and our staff above anything else.”

Due to the in-car social distancing a drive-in affords, many believe they might be used for various gatherings in the future. Hayes admits he has been in touch with schools around the region for graduation ceremonies and some other events.

“I have been approached by some schools and conversations will be had with the school boards, who would have to give approval, I believe,” said Hayes. “I know I can easily put grad messages on the screens, so aspects like that are not an issue.”
