The Town of Innisfil is pleased to introduce Nextdoor, a social media platform connecting neighbours to neighbours. Balancing physical distancing with maintaining opportunities for social connection has become an increasingly important goal in the community’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nextdoor is a place for trusted connections and the exchange of helpful information, goods, and services. Nextdoor envisions a connected community, inspired to create a kinder world where everyone has a neighbourhood they can rely on. Nextdoor is designed to encourage community connections by allowing users to interact within their own geographic neighbourhoods. In addition to sharing reliable sources of information, this platform will be used to promote Town of Innisfil community engagement projects.

As the situation with COVID-19 unfolds, Ontario residents are using Nextdoor to help neighbours and to receive critical information from public agencies. We will also be using Nextdoor’s Help Map Tool, an interactive map that enables users to identify themselves as someone in need or someone who can offer help. We continue to be inspired by how neighbours are coming together to offer support, lean on others when they need help, and stay connected with their local communities.

“Innisfil recognizes that connecting with one another plays a vital role in keeping our community healthy,” says Mayor Lynn Dollin. “We hope that this new platform will provide another positive way for residents to connect while practicing physical distancing, helping us to continue to build resilient neighbourhoods.” “Nextdoor was built to bring neighbours together - this is important in good times and essential in times of need,” says Christopher Doyle, Country Manager, Nextdoor Canada. “Neighbours are turning to Nextdoor to receive critical, real-time information from public agencies. We’re honoured to partner with the Town of Innisfil. We’re also grateful to town officials and emergency service providers for their efforts to keep residents safe during this unprecedented crisis.”

Here’s how neighbours are currently turning to Nextdoor to help one another:

  • Checking in regularly with vulnerable or isolated neighbours
  • Volunteering to pick up necessities for those who aren’t able
  • Organizing virtual groups for parents to stay connected during school closure

Sparked by Innisfil’s reputation for municipal innovation, Nextdoor brings the Town new solutions for connecting residents across Innisfil in a meaningful way. Neighbours in Canada can access Nextdoor by visiting nextdoor.ca or by downloading the app directly to a smart device.
