Fresh Food Weekly is hosting two more ‘Healthy Cooking Summer Workshops for Kids’! “We hosted our first cooking workshop on Monday, July 17th and it went over really well,” says Leah Dyck, Founder of the Fresh Food Weekly food security program.

“Seven kids registered and we made Crispy Chicken Parmesan and Lemon Raspberry Scones during a two-hour time frame. I think the kids had a really good time because afterwards, all the parents asked if we were planning to do another one.”

The goal for Fresh Food Weekly is to see if there is enough interest in the community to continue putting on these cooking workshops on a more regular basis.

On Saturday, July 29th, children will be making an ‘Easy Chicken Alfredo with Roasted Parmesan Broccoli & Cauliflower’ for the main course, and Watermelon Cupcakes for dessert, so your child will come home with dinner ready to eat!

On Saturday, August 5th, children will be making a ‘Three-Cheese Stuffed Shells with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce’ for the main course, and 6 Giant Chocolate Chip Cookies for dessert!

These two-hour workshops are taught by Mary Dyck, who’s been a registered nurse for the past 39 years, spending the majority of her career as a paediatric nurse at Soldier’s Memorial Hospital in Orillia, Ont. She spent the last eight years as a certified Bariatric Educator in the Children’s Obesity Clinic at Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, teaching children and their families about eating healthy and developing healthy eating habits.

Mary is a passionate advocate for healthy living and is excited for the opportunity to use her wealth of knowledge to help kids gain valuable hands-on cooking skills with Fresh Food Weekly’s Healthy Cooking Summer Workshops for Kids.

She’ll teach about the importance of a well-balanced diet and how certain foods affect the body in different ways. Kids will also get to cook their own dinner and dessert, which they can proudly bring home to the family while it’s still warm. All food, supplies and cookware will be provided, and she’ll also have lots of volunteers available to help ensure everyone is getting the most value out of the workshop.
