Are you looking for a hands-on and educational activity for your kids this summer?

Fresh Food Weekly is hosting a ‘Healthy Cooking Summer Workshop for Kids’ fundraiser on Monday, July 17th at Countryside United Church in Thornton, Ontario from 3-5pm for children ages 8 to 12.

Children will be making a Crispy Chicken Parmesan for the main course, and lemon raspberry scones for dessert, so your child will come home with dinner ready to eat!

This two-hour workshop will be taught by Mary Dyck, who has spent the last eight years teaching children about eating healthy!

About Mary Dyck

Mary Dyck has been a registered nurse for the past 39 years, spending the majority of her career as a paediatric nurse at Soldier’s Memorial Hospital in Orillia, Ont. Mary is recently retired, spending the last eight years as a certified Bariatric Educator in the Children’s Obesity Clinic at Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, teaching children and their families about eating healthy and developing healthy eating habits.

Mary is a passionate advocate for healthy living and is excited for the opportunity to use her wealth of knowledge to help kids gain valuable hands-on cooking skills with Fresh Food Weekly’s Healthy Cooking Summer Workshop for Kids.

In this workshop, kids will be taught about the importance of a well-balanced diet and how certain foods affect the body in different ways. Kids will also get to cook their own dinner and dessert, which they can proudly bring home to the family while it’s still warm.

About Fresh Food Weekly

Fresh Food Weekly is a food security program run through The VanDyck Foundation, which is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency. Fresh Food Weekly raises funds to buy fresh and locally sourced food in bulk and then delivers this food to the front doorsteps of low-income families living in Barrie and Innisfil, every other week.

There are currently 80 low-income families on the program and every four weeks, they receive 8L of their choice of 1 per cent, 2 per cent or lactose-free milk, a dozen farm fresh eggs, a wedge of premium dutch cheese, a pound of butter, a minimum of two pounds of meat (usually way more), a loaf of fresh bread baked the same day they receive it and their choice of 11 different types, fruits and vegetables, a six-pack of Costco toilet paper, and other ingredients required to make a themed monthly meal.

For the month of July, this themed meal is ‘Mediterranean Chicken Mini Pitas’ and each program recipient will receive a pack of 10 mini pitas, 600 g of Costco chicken breasts, 200 g crumbled feta, 227 g of roasted garlic and onion hummus, a jar of Terry’s Unique Hot Sauce, a large tomato, their choice of canned pineapple tidbits or jarred sliced olives, onions, romaine lettuce, and lots more!
