A 23-year-old Barrie man will be trading in a lead foot for walking shoes for a while.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Saturday, a Barrie police traffic officer was conducting speed enforcement on the new Harvie Road bridge in the city's south end when a motorist was clocked going 100 kilometres per hour in a 50 km/h zone.

The driver now faces speeding and stunt-driving charges. His vehicle was impounded for 14 days and his driver's licence was suspended for 30 days.

Barrie police took the opportunity to urge drivers to slow down, particularly in that area, which is also not far from police headquarters on Fairview Road.

"It's a location where the traffic unit has been doing proactive enforcement since it opened," police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday. "They have been seeing some excessive speed in that area."

The new bridge opened June 24.

Leon said motorists need to be aware of the residential area around Thrushwood Drive as well as the approach to a "very busy" Veterans Drive. Meanwhile, on the other side of the bridge, there is the intersection at Fairview Road and Big Bay Point.

In this case, the driver was heading across the bridge from the Harvie Road side toward Big Bay Point Road, Leon said.

He also noted that the speed limit in that area is clearly marked and there is also a flashing sign to let drivers know how fast they are travelling.
