A woman wanted by Barrie police for stealing an elderly woman's wallet at an Essa Road grocery store on Thursday, March 7.

City police are asking for the public's assistance to identify a woman after an elderly woman had her wallet stolen while shopping Thursday morning at an Essa Road grocery store.

“It would appear as if the suspect was following her through the store, and when the opportunity presented itself, she was observed taking the wallet,” Barrie police communications coordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday Friday.

"The contents were used to make fraudulent purchases a short time later, along with cash withdrawals.

“The victim is a senior in her late-eighties,” Leon added. “It was terrible that something like this happened while she was shopping. We want to find the person as quick as we can.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at (705) 725-7025, extension 2560.
