Two people charged after Humane Society break-in, vehicle theft

OPP says video surveillance from New Tecumseth break-and-enter shows suspect wearing distinct disguise, including balaclava

Members of the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) have arrested and charged two local individuals in relation to a stolen vehicle and break and enter investigation.

On Monday, Feb. 132023, around 9:30 a.m., a resident on Metcalf Crescent, Tottenham, New Tecumseth reported their motor vehicle, an older-model sedan, stolen from their driveway. Police attended and commenced an investigation.

Shortly thereafter, the occupants of the stolen motor vehicle [allegedly] were involved in a break and enter at a local Humane Society where a quantity of cash, and other items which investigators are not releasing, were stolen.

Video surveillance from the break and enter showed the suspect wearing a distinct disguise, including a balaclava.

On Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023, a member from Nottawasaga CSCU who was familiar with the previous incidents observed the suspect vehicle being operated in Alliston, New Tecumseth. With the assistance of Nottawasaga uniform patrol members, the CSCU officer arrested the occupants of the vehicle and recovered evidence of the break and enter.

The stolen vehicle was seized as evidence, and to be returned to owner. As a result of the investigation, two accused stand charged with various offences.

A 35-year-old male, of no fixed address, has been charged with:

  • Theft under $5,000 CC- 334(b) - two counts;
  • Break and Enter - CC- 348(1)(b);
  • Disguise with intent CC 351(2);
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000 - CC 355(b) - two counts; and
  • Fail to comply with release order - CC 145(5)(a)

A 31-year-old female, from New Tecumseth, has been charged with:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000- CC 355(b)

The accused were held pending bail hearings.
