Human bones found in Springwater deemed ‘historical’

Discovery happened near St. James Cemetery in Crown Hill; Case turned over to Bereavement Authority of Ontario

An investigation has concluded following the discovery of human bones in the area of St. James Cemetery located at 572 Penetanguishene Road, Springwater Township on Aug. 1, 2021.

Shortly before 9 p.m., members of the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended the St. James Cemetery after a bone, suspected to be human, was discovered by a dog being exercised in a field nearby.

The bone was determined by a Forensic Anthropologist from the Centre of Forensic Sciences to be a human bone.

Members of the Huronia West OPP Crime Unit, Central Region Forensic Identification Services and Emergency Response Team, along with members of the Urban Search and Rescue Response Team attended the scene to assist in the investigation.

A second human bone was located, however the bones were determined to be historical in nature.

The matter has now been turned over to the Bereavement Authority of Ontario.  

Police activity in the area has concluded. There is no threat to public safety.
