Two fatal collisions within one week, blocks apart both remain under investigation

Victim in Sunday's fatal crash identified as a 23-year-old Springwater man; 'Speed was definitely a factor,' says police official

City police are still investigating Sunday’s deadly single-vehicle crash that killed a 23-year-old Springwater Township man.

Officers responded to the scene around 6:30 a.m., Sunday, in the area of Highway 400 and Cundles Road East.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon said the vehicle was travelling on Cundles Road toward Duckworth Street when the crash happened.

“Speed was definitely a factor," Leon told BarrieToday on Monday morning.

The driver, who was the vehicle's lone occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released any other details.

The on-scene investigation led to several road closures in the area around Duckworth, Cundles, JC Massie Way and Georgian Drive, and was also affecting the on- and off-ramps to southbound Highway 400.

Sunday’s incident was the second vehicle-related fatality in that area of Barrie in less than a week.

Police received a call at 1:39 p.m., on Tuesday, March 16 regarding a pedestrian who had been struck and killed by a vehicle near Georgian College, just a couple blocks from Sunday's catastrophic crash.

An 88-year-old man was killed in last Tuesday's pedestrian collision.

That incident had Duckworth Street closed between Bell Farm Road and Rose Street, as well as Bernick Drive at Duckworth, for the police investigation.

Leon said the pedestrian fatality remains under investigation and witnesses are being interviewed. No charges have been laid.
