Truck driven through store window in south end, causing structural concerns

'This business will have to be closed for the time being, which is going to be devastating,' says police official

A pick-up truck driven through a storefront window had Barrie police and the canine unit busy in the city’s south end this morning.

Police received a call just after 6 a.m. for a break-in at Enterprise Variety, which is located at Bayview Drive and Little Avenue.

A pick-up truck had been driven through the front of the store and two males were seen fleeing the scene shortly after.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday that, despite officers being on the scene, the investigation around what was stolen hasn’t happened yet due to safety concerns.

“We have not been able to enter the store to see what was, if anything, taken. An engineer has been called to see if the integrity of the structure is still safe enough for us to enter for our investigation at this time,” Leon said Friday morning.

The canine unit was called, but was unsuccessful in finding any suspects.

The vehicle was taken back to police headquarters where it is being examined for forensic evidence.

Police are checking with businesses and local residents in the area for possible video surveillance that coud help with the case.

“We obviously want to catch the people responsible for this and have them answer for their crime,” said Leon. “But this is also unfortunate at this time, especially with what everyone is going through (with the COVID-19 situation).

“This business will have to be closed for the time being, which is going to be devastating," he added. "It affects people who need the items in there as well as the owners who can’t afford to lose the income at the time of the current health crisis.”
