Members of the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid charges in relation to a suspicious vehicle investigation in a north-end Orillia neighbourhood.

The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate.

On May 29, at approximately 3:15 a.m., officers responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle with multiple occupants and a dog parked on Grace Avenue.

Upon locating the vehicle and speaking with the occupants, police determined that two occupants had outstanding warrants. As officers attempted to arrest the occupants, an altercation ensued.

An officer was subsequently attacked by the dog, receiving severe injuries. An officer discharged a firearm to stop the dog, which sustained fatal injuries. One vehicle occupant also suffered injuries during the incident.

As a result of the investigation, three people were arrested and charged.

A 35-year-old male from Orillia was charged with:

·     Assault on a peace officer 

·     Assault causing bodily injury to a peace officer

·     Assault on a peace officer with a weapon

·     Assault with intent to resist

·     Escape from lawful custody

·     Obstruct peace officer

·     Possession of a substance

·     Trafficking of a substance

A 35-year-old female from Orillia was charged with:

·      Assault on a peace officer 

·      Assault causing bodily injury to a peace officer 

·      Assault on a peace officer with a weapon

·      Assault with intent to resist

·      Escape from lawful custody

·      Obstruct peace officer

·      Possession of a substance 

·     Trafficking of a substance 

A 34-year-old female from Barrie was charged with:   

·      Assault on a peace officer       

·      Assault with intent to resist 

·      Escape from lawful custody       

·      Obstruct a peace officer

All accused were held for bail hearings.

The OPP has notified the province's SIU, which has invoked its mandate. As a result, the OPP will not be able to provide any further information. Any other media inquiries should be directed to SIU Communications at 416-622-2342.
