A teenager has been charged after Barrie police say a transit driver was assaulted and their vehicle damaged, Friday evening.

Shortly after 6 p.m, March 24, Barrie police received a report about a Barrie Transit operator allegedly being assaulted by a passenger who also damaged the bus.

Officers responded to the area of Essa Road and Burton Avenue where the transit operator explained what had just taken place.

Investigators were told the suspect had exited the bus and was last seen walking down Bradford Street.

A 19-year-old man, of no fixed address, was located a short distance away and when taken into custody, police say he kicked one of the arresting officers.

None of the involved individuals sustained serious injuries and the damage done to the bus is repairable, which included a broken rear exit door window and plexi-glass divider in driver’s seat area, according to police.

The male suspect was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters on Fairview Road where the investigation continued. He has been charged with assault, mischief under $5,000, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, assaulting police, and breach  of a youth sentence order.

While at headquarters, police say an outstanding bench warrant for assault, was also discovered. As a result, the accused was held pending a bail hearing that took place on Saturday. The video appearance resulted in the male being released from custody on a release order, with conditions, that also requires him to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on April 17.
