'Suspicious activity' at business leads to driver speeding off

Incident happened last night on Bayfield Street when a person called in about two men walking around taking photos

Barrie police hope the release of three photos will help identify a man and a vehicle in connection to an ongoing investigation.

On Wednesday night (March 15), Barrie police responded to a report of suspicious activity in the parking lot of a Bayfield Street department store.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m., police say officers spoke to the complainant who had been shopping in a nearby store and advised that when he came out and made his way to his vehicle, he observed two men walking around it taking pictures.

The men were questioned about their actions by the caller and left in what was described as a black Ford F-150 pickup truck.

A licence plate was obtained, but it was later determined that the plates did not belong to the pickup truck.

When police arrived in the parking lot, the officers were made aware of the location of the pickup truck and, as they approached it, the driver sped off at a high rate of speed.

"The dangerous manner in which the pickup was being driven limited police from being able to safely stop and conduct an investigation, but police did obtain video and pictures of the driver and the truck from a nearby fast-food restaurant drive-thru lane," police said in a news release.

Police say the video also allowed officers to confirm that the pickup is a 2015 to 2020 Ford F-150 Supercab, with black steel rims, mismatched tires on the driver’s side and either painted or blackened licence-plate covers.

Anyone who recognizes the person or vehicle in the photos is "strongly encouraged" to email the investigating officer at [email protected].
