Police are not to blame for one man’s broken ankle, according to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

The SIU were investigating an incident in Collingwood after a man whom police were arresting suffered a broken ankle.

According to the SIU report, the OPP's provincial ROPE (Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement) team went to a Collingwood home at 2 p.m. on Jan. 30 to arrest a 36-year-old man with an outstanding warrant.

Police knocked on the door and verbally identified themselves. The man inside then jumped out a second-floor window. When he landed, he broke his ankle.

Any time a person alleges sexual assault or is injured or dies while in police custody or during an incident involving police, the SIU is notified to conduct an investigation.

SIU director Tony Loparco terminated this investigation in Collingwood.

“The man caused his own injury when he jumped out of the second-storey window, and the injury had nothing to do with any act or omission on the part of the police,” said Loparco in a press release.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency and the SIU director is mandated by the Police Services Act to consider whether an officer committed a criminal offence, lay criminal charges where appropriate, and report the results of any investigations to the attorney general.
