NEWS RELEASE
BARRIE POLICE SERVICE
*********************
On Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018, just after 2:15 p.m., police attended Innisdale Secondary School following a report of a handgun believed to be inside the school.

A lockdown was immediately initiated by school officials (during a lockdown all doors are locked and no one is allowed to enter or exit the school). The school and surrounding property was searched by police, although a gun was not located. The lockdown which lasted just under an hour was lifted and students were released from the school.

Several youths were spoken to by police and the validity of the complaint is still under investigation. There was never any threat made to staff or students, and at this time there is no concern for public safety. All classes will resume Friday morning. We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation and patience throughout this incident.

Police would also like to take this opportunity to remind parents and/or caregivers not to call 9-1-1 or the Barrie Police Communications Centre during a lockdown. During this time call-takers are extremely busy coordinating police response and other incoming emergencies. It may be tempting to make that call to ascertain further information or even drive to the school, although this could be very problematic during a serious incident.  During a lockdown police are focused on the task at hand and the safety of everyone involved. Information will be released when possible by the Media Information Officer, and can be found on the Barrie Police website and social media platforms (Twitter and Facebook).
