RIDE stops check 150 drivers in Tiny and Tay Townships

Driver involved in single vehicle collision and traffic stop charged with impaired driving offenses

Midland, ON - Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted RIDE. and investigated two traffic related incidents of interest over the Jan. 31 - Feb. 1, 2018 period.

Traffic Stop

Jan. 31, 2018 8:28 a.m. while patrolling on Vasey Road in Tay Township an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic offence. The roadside investigation resulted in the driver Jonathan Howie, 36-years-old, of Tay Township being charged with

  • Driving under suspension contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Drive motor vehicle-no permit contrary to section 7(1) (a) of the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Use plate not authorized contrary to section 12(1) (d) of the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Fail to surrender permit contrary to section 7(5) (a) of the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Fail to apply for permit on becoming owner contrary to section 11(2) of the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Operate motor vehicle- no insurance contrary to section 2(1) (b) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act

His vehicle was towed from the scene and has a future court date before the Ontario Court of Justice Provincial Division in Penetanguishene at a future date.

R.I.D.E. Checks

A total of 5 R.I.D.E. check stops locations were set up across Tiny, Tay and Georgian Bay Townships and the Town of Penetanguishene resulting in over 150 drivers were checked for drinking and driving offences.

Impaired Driver

Feb. 1, 2018 at 4:17 p.m. officers were dispatched to a single vehicle crash on Hoyt Ave. at Juneau Road in Tay Township. Roadside investigation resulted in the male driver being arrested at the scene and transported to Southern Georgian Bay Detachment for further investigation. As a result of the investigation, John Strath, 48-years-old, of Tay Township has been charged with the following Criminal Code of Canada offences:

  • Impaired operation of a motor vehicle contrary to section 253(1)(a)
  • Operate a motor vehicle -over 80 mgs contrary to section 253(1)(b)  

Further, his driver's license was suspended for 90 days under the Administrative Driver's License Suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days. The accused was released from police custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland at a future date.
