INNISFIL - On Sunday, June 25, 2017, around 2:30 p.m., South Simcoe Police Service officers were aboard the John Wardrop II on Lake Simcoe when they received a call for two overturned kayaks near Fox Island.

The Coast Guard initiated a mayday call for all vessels in the vicinity. As officers arrived they found three overturned vessels with no signs of occupants or persons in the water. During their search they were told that the occupants had made it to shore safely.

The five people were interviewed and officers learned that a sudden change in the weather caused one kayak to overturn, sending two occupants into the water. Assistance from another boater helped the entire party reach shore.

This potentially tragic incident could have been avoided had the boaters check a weather forecast before leaving shore. A squall warning was in effect for most of Sunday. Personal flotation devices worn by all involved contributed to this happy ending.

Boaters are reminded to have all necessary safety equipment and a cell phone with them at all times.
