'Potential for disaster': Stunt-driving charge laid in east end

City police say they clocked driver at 103 km/h in a 50 zone; 'Those are speeds we would see on a highway being travelled in a municipal setting,' says police official

A 21-year-old Barrie man needs to find a new way to get around the city after having his driver's licence suspended and his vehicle impounded by police on the weekend.

Around 3 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14, police say the driver was caught going 103 kilometres per hour in the area of Blake and Rodney streets in the city’s east end.

That neighbourhood has a designated 50-km/h speed limit, as are most areas in the city, said Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon.

“The officer was just in her patrol area and every officer is expected to make sure the roads in their area are safe and that people are driving in accordance with the speed limit," he told BarrieToday. "Obviously, this person chose to drive at 53 (km/h) over the posted speed limit and has been charged accordingly."

The driver, who has been charged with both stunt driving and speeding, had his licence suspended for 30 days and his car impounded for 14 days. He is scheduled to appear in court in October.

“Those are speeds we would see on a highway being travelled in a municipal setting," Leon said. "An animal crossing the road at that time of night  or really anything, for that matter  would cause the operator of that motor vehicle to swerve out of control. At that speed, that’s incredibly dangerous.

“Given the time of day, that’s one thing we can be grateful for that there was no other vehicular traffic on the road at that time. The potential for disaster is obviously there at those excessive speeds," he added.
