Police hope surveillance images will help sniff out dog thieves (6 photos)

'This is certainly a different type of theft, one we don’t normally see,' says Barrie police official

Barrie police continues to investigate a brazen dog theft and have released surveillance images with the hopes that the public can help collar the thieves.

A German boxer named Frazer was stolen from an Orwell Crescent home last Tuesday when two women forced themselves into the home and grabbed the dog before fleeing in a nearby vehicle.

Today, police released still photos of a four-door black Honda Civic, with snow tires, and the driver who dragged a good Samaritan that tried to intervene and prevent the theft.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon tells BarrieToday that he hopes the pictures will be familiar to someone.

“The picture quality may not be the best when it comes to the person of interest, but hopefully someone recognizes them and the vehicle, or even has dash-cam footage from that area that day,” he said on Nov. 30.

Two women and a man were said to be involved in the theft and subsequent injuries to a neighbour who tried to assist.

The neighbour who had been shovelling and heard the commotion, was taken to local hospital and treated for minor injuries after being dragged about 30 metres before he was able to free himself from the vehicle and got thrown to the ground.

“This is certainly a different type of theft, one we don’t normally see,” said Leon. “These are difficult times, certainly strange times. Right now, we want to locate the dog, who is a loved family member to those who had it taken away.”

Leon said police have followed up with a few leads that have not ended in any substantial information.

If anyone can identify the vehicle, knows the driver or the whereabouts of a 30-year-old female suspect who was involved in the theft, they are asked to call Barrie police at 705-725-7025, ext. 2129.
