City police hope surveillance footage will provide some clues following a fatal stabbing Saturday morning in downtown Barrie that left a 30-year-old Barrie man dead and his killer still on the loose.

"Our investigators are working around the clock," Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday during an interview at police headquarters this morning.

That includes combing through plenty of surveillance footage.

"We're very fortunate in the downtown area there's a lot of video surveillance that is available, so we're in the process of getting that (evidence) now and going over it, frame by frame," Leon said.

"We're hopeful it will identify some persons of interest or ultimately the persons responsible for this crime," he added.

Police officials have said they consider the homicide to be an isolated incident.

At 7:15 a.m., Saturday, police officers and Simcoe County paramedics responded to 16 Dunlop St. E.

Leon said the stabbing is believed to have happened right around the time emergency crews responded to the call.

The 30-year-old Barrie man was found suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The victim's name has not been released.

Investigators are also awaiting results from the post-mortem examination.

On Saturday, officers focused their investigation on an area bordered by Clapperton Street to Owen Street, and from Collier Street to Dunlop Street East.

Detectives are also receiving tips from the public, but Leon urged anyone with information to come forward by contacting Det.-Const. Bruce Bernard at 705-725-7025 ext. 2162 or by email at [email protected].

Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or at www.p3tips.com.
