Police resume search for Mandy Thompson

Thompson walked away from her home on Feb. 3

Barrie Police and the OPP combined resources again Tuesday in a renewed search for missing senior Mandy Thompson.

Thompson, who has dementia, walked away from her Barrie home early Feb 3.

A woman believed to be the 72-year old was captured on security camera video walking north on Penetanguishene Rd. the same day she went missing.

"We have extended the search north of there and extended even further north of Highway 11 to Highway 93," said Barrie Police Const. Sarah Bamford.

"We still are continuing to search areas we searched during the winter months.  We're utilizing the spring-like temperatures, the spring thaw.  We're extending the search off the areas previously searched as well."

Police are taking advantage of the weather to search now before leaves start growing in and cover the area.

A lot of the terrain is heavy dense bush and forests which had been snow and ice covered during the initial searches.

Canine officers, the OPP helicopter, and Barrie Police and OPP search teams were on the ground.

Const. Blair King of the Barrie Police Tactical Support Team spent almost two hours searching along snowmobile trails and the areas on either side from Line 1 to Highway 93.

"It's pretty wet, mucky out there. We're up almost to our knees at some points," said King, who has been involved in the search from the beginning.

"No signs of Mandy's whereabouts," said King. "We'd just like to give some closure to the family."

The community continues to pray for Mandy and her family, according to police, who are constantly asked by the public how to help.

Police are again asking people to check properties for any sign of the missing senior.

"We can't utilize citizens in our search but we are asking anybody that lives in the Oro-Medonte area off Highway 93 north of Highway 11 to check their properties, sheds, any outbuildings and even the areas that we previously checked in the winter," said Bamford.

People are also being urged to continue to share police messaging on social media about Mandy.

The renewed search wrapped up late Tuesday and police say further search efforts will be launched if investigators receive new leads.
