Warm temperatures mean cyclists are still out there pedalling. A bicycle is the smallest vehicle on the road and their riders are some of the most vulnerable road users. It is important, therefore, for cyclists to be visible, to ride predictably, to know how traffic works, and to communicate with other road users.

Here are some safety tips to help keep cyclists safe:

1. Look for cyclists. They can appear quickly
2. As a driver, don't assume a cyclists will hear your vehicle approaching
3. Exercise caution when backing out or parking spaces or laneways. Children with small bikes may be difficult to see.
4. Be cautious at stop signs. Some cyclists may ride through a stop sign, although this is illegal.
5. Look for cyclists making a left hand turn.
6. Look before opening your door. Avoid being distracted and check your mirrors.
7. Cyclists have a right to be on the road. Drivers should not be resentful of cyclists, instead they should understand the importance of
sharing the roads.
