Police nab teen suspect after rash of car thefts in south end

'These thefts don't need to happen,' says Barrie police official who encourages residents to lock it or lose it

Another reminder by police to lock it or lose it after several items, including a laptop, were taken from unlocked vehicles parked in local driveways this past weekend.

Police have charged a 16-year-old with possession of stolen property under $5,000 after a number of vehicles were entered this past Friday in the city’s south end.

Barrie Police Communications Coordinator Peter Leon said the call came in at 6:26 a.m. after someone saw a neighbour's car being rummaged through.

“This person was able to give us a detailed description of the suspect and police located the teen walking along Rundle Crescent carrying bags with several items,” said Leon.

The thefts took place in the Columbia Road, Lougheed Road, Rundle Crescent and Waddington Crescent area. Anyone missing something should email [email protected] in an attempt to retrieve it.

Leon said the thefts are “completely preventable” and hopes people will start to heed the advice to check their car doors each night.

“These thefts don’t need to happen, they just don’t. Some of the items retrieved were a laptop and a wallet, they should never have been left in a vehicle overnight, let alone an unlocked one,” said Leon.

“Besides the fact these things cost a lot, imagine your wallet being gone and having to go through the hassle of reacquiring all your personal cards. Not having your health card if you had a vaccination appointment coming up would be terrible.”

Leon also spoke to the age of the accused and said it was very upsetting to see youth out all night committing the act.

“At 16 years old, this person should have been home in bed,” said Leon. “And the accused definitely does have a home, a place to go.”
