Police investigate suspected explosive device

ORILLIA - On Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call for an explosive device at the Orillia OPP Detachment.

At approximately 4:30 a.m., a concerned citizen discovered what appeared to be an explosive device at a nearby location within the city of Orillia and transported it to the Orillia OPP Detachment. 

Members of the Orillia OPP immediately attended. Central Region Tactics and Response Unit (TRU), Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU), Central Region Forensic Identification Services (FIS), Orillia Fire Department and the County of Simcoe Paramedic Service (CSPS) were all called in to ensure the safety of detachment staff and the public.

At approximately 8:15 a.m. the device was deemed to no longer be a threat to public safety. The device did not impact the level of service that the Orillia OPP delivers to the citizens of Orillia. 

If anyone finds what they believe to be an explosive device they should immediately call police and not move it or bring it to the detachment. Police will respond to the location and deploy resources to the scene.
