Barrie police dog Thunder has had a busy weekend.

The Barrie police canine unit assisted in arrests on Saturday that saw five charges of assault laid in two separate incidents.

At about 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Barrie police got a call for a “threatening” incident that had taken place in the area of Brock and Innisfil streets, according to communications co-ordinator Peter Leon.

“Thankfully, the victim wasn’t injured in any way,” said Leon. “Our canine unit responded and police were able to set up a perimeter and were able to track... three suspects to the Barrie Allandale GO station on the platform waiting for the train to leave town.”

Four people were charged with assault as a result.

Leon said the other incident was family-related. The police dog was able to track a suspect who left the family residence. A suspect was arrested and charged with assault in that incident as well.

“We’ve had some very good success in recent days with the canine unit,” said Leon. “It’s an incredibly valuable resource we have to utilize with our day-to-day operations. They love doing their job.”
