Police dog Nitro tracks down injured driver who ran into the woods (3 photos)

Woman discovered under thick foliage; She was unresponsive and had to be carried out by emergency crews

South Simcoe police service dog Nitro was able to track down an injured female driver who had run into the woods after a multi-vehicle crash on the weekend, according to authorities.

On Saturday, Sept. 11 at approximately 3 p.m., South Simcoe police officers were called to a collision on Sideroad 10, just south of Highway 89 in Innisfil.

Once on scene, police learned that a Nissan Versa travelling northbound on Sideroad 10 struck a Ford cargo van in front of it, then crossed into southbound traffic and collided head-on with a Volkswagen Jetta. A southbound Honda CRV then hit the back of the Jetta and went into the ditch.

After the collision, witnesses told police the female driver of the Nissan had exited her vehicle and ran into the woods. Witnesses provided a description of the woman and said she was injured. She was the lone occupant of her vehicle, according to police.

The canine unit was called out to the scene and a perimeter was set up.

Nitro began to track into the wooded area and, a short time later, located the woman concealed under very thick foliage.

Police say the woman was unresponsive and had to be carried out of the woods by officers, firefighters and paramedics.  She was transported to a local hospital.

Two people from the Jetta were also taken to hospital. All of the injuries were considered non-life-threatening, police say.

The investigation is ongoing.
