Police chase after carjacking concludes in east end

Incident began on Eugenia Street when the vehicle was taken 'violently'; Arrest made on Penetanguishene Road

A carjacking this morning sent Barrie police on a chase that would see multiple vehicles damaged and one person being taken into custody.

Police received a call at 10:10 a.m., April 24, about a carjacking on Eugenia Street in the city’s east end.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday the vehicle was “violently taken,” but the victim did not suffer any serious injuries.

“The individual who took it then proceeded to drive it in an extremely dangerous manner,” said Leon. “As we were finding out about this situation happening, our officers did attempt to stop the vehicle.”

The driver continued to drive dangerously, said Leon, to the point that public safety was compromised and that three Barrie police vehicles sustained damage in the ordeal.

“Thankfully, there were no injuries to any officers and we did take the driver into custody on Penetanguishene Road,” he added.

A 31-year-old man was arrested and taken to police headquarters for processing. His name and hometown were not available at publication time.

Police say the vehicle was stolen on Eugenia Street and at one point was driven north on Berczy Street to Codrington Street, south to Collier Street via Mulcaster Road and out Blake Street before being stopped by police on Penetanguishene Road.
