OPP takes to the sky in Angus, Springwater in separate searches

OPP tight-lipped on police activity around Angus last night, but officers are also back out searching for an elderly man in Springwater this morning

Officials with Nottawasaga OPP are keeping mum on the reasons behind a late-night incident in the Angus area, Thursday.

Residents in Angus noticed a low-flying chopper overhead, followed by a high level of police activity beginning around 11 p.m., May 26.

Acting Sgt. Cindy Jacome, who serves as media relations officer with Nottawasaga OPP, told BarrieToday that police were requested in a “tiered aviation” response last night.

“It wasn’t clear in the call whether they actually made it because then they were actually not really required after the fact,” she said. “It's something that is sensitive in nature, so we are not commenting on it.”

Jacome did say that to the best of her knowledge, the helicopter seen in Angus was not related to the search for a missing 87-year-old Harvey Doherty, who was last seen in the area of County Road 27 and Mills Circle in Springwater Township at 3:45 p.m. on May 26 with his dog, Molly.

“I know there was a call in our area that did require aviation, which is separate from that," she said.

Central Region OPP spokesperson Gosia Puzio confirmed to BarrieToday this morning that officers had been searching by helicopter in Springwater in the evening of May 26.

“Officers are back out searching for him (today). Canine and emergency response team, and aviation, are engaged again this morning,” she said. “They have been out since daybreak and the search continues.”

Doherty is described as a white male, standing six feet tall with short white hair. He was wearing a blue sweater and black pants.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 1-888-310-1122.
